Women’s Intermediate Cup
Ashford RFC Ladies faced Barnes in the first round of the Women’s Intermediate Cup this weekend. Having previously played the Barnes in the league last season Ashford knew it would be a tough fixture, especially with some key players missing. However with positive vibes running through the team from the previous weeks win and determination to give the supporters a good game, Ashford came out fighting.
Early on in the first half Ashford moved into the ascendancy, dominating at the set piece and with territorial gain. The home side were soon rewarded for their continued pressure as Barnes found themselves pinned deep in their own 22. As the visitors tried to exit, Flanker Ellie Drabble was on-hand to make the interception, the final off-load found Scrum-half Laura Charter who dived over the line for her third try of the season.
As the 1st half came to a close Barnes capitalised on a 5 metre scrum. Going through the phases the visitors took the lead with a converted try under the posts.
The second half became the ‘Battle of the Back Rows’ as Barnes threw their big ball carriers, most notably their strapping No.8 at Ashford’s defensive line. Despite a valiant effort in defence the Ladies could only hold-out so long, and the visitors eventually found their way over the whitewash. On first inspection Prop Leanne Kelly looked as though she had held the player up, however the ball was finally deemed as ground.
Ashford’s Ladies gave everything and more in an effort to repel the constant barrage of attacks. A score in the final seconds from the visitors ended the game Ashford 5-21 Barnes.
