Ashford continued their run of winning one league game followed by losing one game and are now 7 league games into the season and the wrong end of the league having now lost 4 of those 7.
Defeat came at the hands of Vigo who were undoubtedly the better team on the day and they thoroughly deserved their win. They were in truth everything Ashford weren’t on the day, they looked organised, well drilled, made good decisions and recognised the strengths within their own team and the weakness’s in the Ashford side and exploited these time and again.
At half time Vigo were 32 – 0 up, had played some good rugby, capitalised on the litany of errors from Ashford and never looked like conceding a point, it was game over and there was still 40 minutes to play!
Ashford played slightly better in the second half and scored a well worked try and finished the game with a Penalty Try awarded but sandwiched between these events were more tries from the home side who romped to victory.
Ashford had 14 players unavailable and injured on Saturday and have so far used 34 players this season in just the 7 league games. so there has been barely any continuity and this is a factor in these dismal performances but they should be a lot better than this. The onus is now very much on the players and coaches to find their way out of this slump, all the early season talk of goals and targets are being quickly washed away and now everyone must pull together to deliver some performances worthy of the 1st XV shirt.
