Ashford 0 – Haywards Heath 23
Ashford returned back to Kinneys Field on Saturday and hosted Haywards Heath who earlier in the season had unleashed a monster pack on them to score a resounding win at home. The Heath side which arrived on Saturday was notably different but sitting 4th in the league, they were smart with the decision making and execution which was ultimately the difference.
What is now becoming a fairly settled Ashford pack did themselves great justice for the 2nd game in a row with Ben King and Shane Redman getting particular mentions for their work rates. Poor decision making was again the key factor as Ashford made some bad choices and handling errors in key attacking areas, Heath on the other hand scored 3 tries in fairly quick succession and showed why they’re pushing hard for promotion. Ashford lost a player early on, as an obvious swinging arm went unpenalized and some strange decisions from the official were an unfortunate theme of the game.
In what was a spirited display there were obvious bright spots, not least the unity that this team now displays and appetite for the battle which they will need in the coming weeks as they face the 2 teams directly above them. As always hard work on the training field, good direction from the coaching staff and a continued positive approach are needed to lift the club off the foot of the table but with key players returning from injury there is certainly hope!
