David Nelson

After a very sad start to the season with the loss of two of our much loved members, it is now our extremely sad duty to report the passing on Monday of David Nelson after a long battle against cancer.

David was a Life Vice President of Ashford Rugby Club, in recognition of his considerable contribution to the Club over many years. He played for all three of the senior sides, captaining both the 2nd and 3rd teams in the late eighties. After a period in Cheshire due to his work, he returned to Ashford and continued his lifelong support of our Club.

He will be remembered in particular for his friendship, generosity and his legendary sense of humour. Indeed, his exploits on rugby tours were, and will continue to be the stuff of legends! Our thoughts are with his brother, Ian and the rest of his family and close friends.

David’s funeral will be held on Tuesday 16thOctober at Charing Crematorium at 10.15 and afterwards back at Ashford Rugby Club. The family have asked for no flowers but donations to one of David’s two charities, Bowel Cancer UK or WaterAid. The family have requested that anyone attending should dress colourfully to match David’s personality, BBQ and rugby shirts are encouraged.

I have only just come acrooss the sad news about Dave Nelson as i am living in france and only occasionally look on the Ashford rugby club webb site, so please could you pass on my condolences to Ian Nelson on the passing of his lovely brother Dave.

I played for Ashford in the 80,s along side Dave in the 2nds, 3rds, and 4ths, even once in the 5ths after Dave was coming back from injury.
I have spent many an evening staying at Daves house after an evening drinking with Ian and staggering back to Daves cottage in the center of Ashford.
Dave will be sadly missed as although he was from Leyland Lancashire i feel his heart was in Ashford and was the was an inspiration to younger players like myself both on and off the field

    RIP Dave

    Mike (kentucky) Woodward
