Ashford 2s travelled to Gravesend with a bare 15 players in what was anticipated to be a hard fought game. Starting strongly and enjoying territorial advantage, Ashford’s fortunes turned with the loss of a player to a head injury. Despite the setback, they reached halftime 5-0 ahead, courtesy of a Marc Huxted try in the corner. Gravesend’s numerical superiority showed in the second half and quickly took a 7-5 lead from kick off. Ashford responded with a Geoff Pulford try, the reward for a period of sustained pressure, and Will Welsh converted for a 12-7 lead. On the hour, Ashford lost a second player to another head injury and played the last 20 minutes of the game with only 13 men. Gravesend took advantage to score two tries, but as the game came to a close Ashford pinned the home side back into their own half, and good sniping by Shane Bushell led to a touchdown that was disallowed as the referee determined a forward pass had been involved. Having lost the opportunity of snatching a well-earned draw, Ashford went down by 19-12.
